Lauded for his “powerful musical intellect and effortless technical facility” The Scotsman, British pianist Alexander Ullman has captivated audiences and critics worldwide with the depth of his musical vision and the elegance and mastery of his pianism.
The 2023/24 seasons saw debuts at the Vienna Musikverein with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria under Hans Graf, the Salzburg Grosser Saal with Mozarteum Orchestra (Patrick Hahn), the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra (Darrell Ang) in Chengdu, Kristiansand Symfoniorkester under Julian Rachlin, the SWR Sinfonierrchester (Joseph Bastian) and a return to the Sofia Philharmonic under Jonathan Bloxham. Other highlights include his debut at Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, a return to Wigmore Hall, Klavierfest Ruhr, concerto appearances with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta (under Ola Rudner), Sofia Philharmonic and Filharmonie Brno (both under Dennis Russell Davies), the Symphony of India Orchestra (Mikel Toms), a two-piano recital with Teo Gheorghiu at the Freiburg Festival in Switzerland and recitals in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands.
Ullman has also performed with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and given recitals in Germany (Munich, Bayreuth, Weimar, Heidelberger Frühling, Berlin), Austria (Liszt Festival Raiding and Vienna Konzerthaus), Hungary (Liszt Academy Budapest), Poland, Georgia, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, France, Spain, Korea, and India.
As a collaborative artist Ullman has worked in the UK and Germany with violinist Rosanne Philippens and cellist Julia Hagen and he continues performing with his Netherlands-based piano quartet the Redon Quartet (violinist Pieter van Loenen, violist Dana Zemtsov, cellist Laura van der Heijden). This year he travels to the Netherlands, the UK, the United States and China. He will also debut with the newly founded Trans-Atlantic Ensemble (specialising in contemporary music) at the Royal Over-Seas League in London.
In Spring 2019, Ullman’s first album on Rubicon, featuring Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, Prokofiev’s Six Pieces from Cinderella, as well as Stravinsky’s Petrushka and Firebird suites, received rave reviews. In 2022, the label released a second album featuring Franz Liszt's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton, as well as the Piano Sonata in B minor. October 2025 sees the release of his next album focused on the solo piano music of Edvard Grieg.
The winner of the 2017 International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht, Ullman has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Budapest Radio Orchestra and Korean Symphony Orchestra, as well as the New Jersey, Fort Worth and Montreal symphonies, working with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Giancarlo Guerrero, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Valentin Uryupin and Cristian Măcelaru.
In the 17/18 season he closed the Lille Piano(s) Festival with Orchestre de Picardie under Jean-Claude Casadesus. He has performed at Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, the Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Kimmel Center (Philadelphia), Kennedy Center (Washington DC), MUPA (Budapest), Seoul Arts Center, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center and the NCPA in Beijing, and has been featured in the Nottingham and Oxford international piano series, on BBC Radio 3, France Musique and MDR Klassik.
Chamber music highlights include performances at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove (UK), Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany), Eggenfelden Klassisch Festival (Germany), the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades (France) and La Jolla Summerfest (US) with performers such as the Dover Quartet, the Danel Quartet and violinists Barnabas Kelemen, Aleksey Semenenko and Martin Beaver.
Ullman first came to international attention in 2011 after winning the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition in Budapest. From 2014 to 2017 he was represented by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT). Born in London, in 1991, he studied at the Purcell School, the Curtis Institute and the Royal College of Music, completing his Artist Diploma as the “Benjamin Britten Piano Fellow” in 2017 (awarded by the Philip Loubser Foundation). His teachers have included Dmitri Alexeev, Leon Fleisher, William Fong, Ian Jones, Robert McDonald, Ignat Solzhenitsyn and Elisso Virsaladze.
